Mountain farm

Greene County, Virginia

Farm buildings nestle on the eastern slopes of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the last light of a winter's day. The snow from a recent storm is almost gone, but the evening air is chilly, and the mountains look cold. Ir will be a night to spend in front of the fire looking forward to the first warm spring days.

Fencerow

Greene County, Virginia

By the end of last week the snow was mostly gone and I took a walk in the mud with the camera. It was nearly dusk when I came to this pasture field. The cows were headed back to the barn, and the fence row against the distant Blue Ridge Mountains looked lonely in the fading winter light.

Saturday morning

Green Springs Historic District - Louisa County, Virginia

The pictures that I posted last week from Green Springs were all taken on a damp and foggy winter morning. Around 10:00 the fog lifted and the sun started shining through the clouds across the open farmland that looks much as it did 100 years ago. It was a scene out of time.

The picture above is one of the last shots of the morning. By the time I got home, the skies were clear.

Cabin

Green Springs Historic District - Louisa County, Virginia

Photographing in Green Springs is an ongoing project and I hope to be back in the district again as soon as the weather warms up. All of the pictures presented this week were taken a year ago, in February 2013.

Hope you have a good weekend and thanks for reading Photography In Place.

Back road

Green Springs Historic District - Louisa County, Virginia

In Louisa County, 14,000 acres of privately owned land has been set aside through easements designed to preserve the largely intact 19th century rural character of what was once some of the richest farmland in Virginia. See here for additional posts about Green Springs.

Visit Photography In Place Print Gallery to purchase a framed print of this picture. Individual prints and note cards are also available.

Weep not for me

Wintergreen Cemetery - Port Gibson, Mississippi

Angels are seen as messengers between heaven and earth, symbolizing hope and comfort. Beneath this angel, the inscription reads:

Weep not for me, I'm going home.
A memorial by her young friends

There is no death date recorded on this tombstone.

Gone home - 1877

Wintergreen Cemetery - Port Gibson, Mississippi

Hands symbolized life. The hand pointing upward is an indication that the soul has gone to heaven.

Last year I spent an autumn afternoon among the moss draped cedar trees and weathered tombstones at Wintergreen Cemetery in Port Gibson, Mississippi. Wintergreen is one of the oldest cemeteries in Mississippi, dating from 1807. This week we will be looking at some of the old tombstones and explaining the iconography that reflects the sorrow and the hope of those left behind.

Fireplug

Port Gibson, Mississippi

Pitchers and catchers will start reporting for spring training in a few days but spring and the opening day of baseball season still seems very far off.  I picture players tossing the ball around in sunshine, shirt-sleeves and balmy air, but cold weather has pushed so far south this year that training camps may be more winter than spring.

Close to home, the snow is gone and the ice is melting off the lake. Canada geese gather at the edge of the water to discuss the situation. It's time to start thinking about spring.

Have a great weekend and thanks for reading Photography In Place.
