All of the pictures this week in the Shenandoah National Park were taken on May 23, 2016. At the foot of the Blue Ridge, the trees were summer lush, but on the mountain that day, spring was still emerging in rain and fog.

Snow on the Blue Ridge

Warren County, Virginia 

Snow still lingered in the Blue Ridge Mountains as I drove along the Gooney Manor Loop back in March.

Unfortunately, a fire which started last Saturday has scorched almost 6000 acres in the Shenandoah National Park. The fire is in the park's Southern District, about 50 miles to the south of where the photograph above was taken. Fire crews are working to contain the fire within park boundaries, and so far no structures have been affected.

Rain and the river

Warren County, Virginia 

Week before last, I spent a couple of days camped in the travel trailer at Shenandoah River State Park. The first day was devoted to a hike in the nearby Shenandoah National Park. There was still some snow in the mountains making walking difficult in places, and it was colder than we anticipated, but what does one expect in February.  Another thing about hiking in the mountains: how is it that we walked a five mile loop trail, ended up where we started, and it was ALL uphill. It defies the laws of physics (pass the ibuprofen).

The next morning it was raining. This week, a walk in the rain along the Shenandoah River.

It may be just the way the light strikes this outcropping, but I see a sad, patient stone face, eyes raised to the sun, bound forever to this ancient rock.

Low clouds hung over the mountains one morning last week. A light rain fell as I walked through the woods in the fog. On the soggy ground, I moved along silent as an Indian, enjoying the quiet and the mountain landscape that materialized ahead of me, and disappeared into the fog behind.

Yesterday (Nov. 1) I spent the afternoon in Shenandoah National Park. Wind and rain last week brought down a lot of the leaves, but there was still color in the mountains, particularly in more sheltered valleys.
