I've been enjoying the pictures from Portsmouth Village this week. They're excellent. It sounds like a fascinating place. Are there plans to maintain these homes, or are they just going to be left to the elements?
ReplyDeleteEd, I talked to a member of the "Friends of Portsmouth Island", a private volunteer group which helps in preserving the village, and he said that the National Park Service is shamefully neglecting maintenance of the buildings. On the other hand, the village seemed remarkably well preserved to me--I was expecting mostly abandoned, run down structures slowly succumbing to the elements.
DeleteThere is still some damage from hurricane Sandy that has not been repaired. The church was closed to the public because of damage and a dock destroyed in the storm is just now being rebuilt.
Like most things, I expect the future of the village is a matter of politics and priorities, with a little help from "friends." From what I saw a couple of weeks ago, the village is in good hands.
