Mississippi Riverboat
Our correspondent in Mississippi sent along this photo of the new American Cruise Lines stern-wheeler American Eagle docked at Vicksburg. The 305 foot riverboat was built at Chesapeake Shipbuilding in Maryland and was delivered to New Orleans earlier this year. The American Eagle will be offering cruises on the Mississippi River between New Orleans and Memphis.
On a warm summer evening, the sight and sound of a riverboat on the Mississippi evokes a bit of the Old South, but wherever you are, enjoy your weekend and thanks for reading Photography In Place.

Passenger cars past
Back in June I was able to photograph Norfolk and Western steam locomotive 611 as it made its first excursion in over 20 years. The star of the show, of course, was the massive J-class locomotive, beautifully restored and steaming on the mainline, but the passenger cars behind it told their own story.
The Crescent Harbor is a Pullman sleeper/lounge car delivered to Southern Railway in 1950 for service on the famous Southern Crescent Limited.
The Northern Pacific Stampede Pass was built in 1954 for the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad.
The Stampede Pass was the Northern Pacific's crossing of the Cascade Mountains in western Washington state.
The dome/observation car Jackson Square was originally built for the Great Northern Railroad, but has been in service to several railroads over the years
There were many more historic passenger cars behind N&W 611. These three were photographed at Front Royal, Virginia on June 6, 2015 as the train prepared to return to Manassas.

Trinity Brethren Church - 1904
Located in Fort Valley between the arms of the northern Massanutten Mountain Range, Trinity Brethren Church is no longer used as a church. In 2008 the church and surrounding property were deeded to the Fort Valley Museum, which is itself housed in an old brick church just down the road.

Summer image #2
Greene County, Virginia
This image was left on the porch floor just as in yesterday's post, only this time it was formed by a leaf instead of a flower.
Have a great weekend and thanks for reading Photography In Place.

Summer image
Greene County, Virginia
Boxes of Vinca on our side porch drop leaves and flowers on the wood floor. When I swept the porch I noticed that an image of the flowers was left behind. So this is a digital photograph of what might be called a photograph formed directly and naturally on the painted wood floor.
The images soon faded, and brought to mind the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi which embraces the transient and imperfect nature of natural processes.

House on the hill
Greene County, Virginia
All was quiet as I rode around on the back roads of Greene County one morning last week. Over the years, modern style houses have been scattered out along these roads as fewer farms make more home-sites available. This large, old-style farm house is a picture of rural architecture from an earlier time.

White barn
Greene County, Virginia
As I drove around the county last week, I was struck by the fact that in spite of all the rapid and sometimes overwhelming changes that go on in our world, there are still places that change has mostly by-passed, leaving behind July-green trees, the solid blue mountains and an old white barn.

July corn
Greene County, Virginia
The corn was not quite "as high as an elephant's eye" last week, but it is high enough to nearly hide the farm buildings nestled at the foot of the cloud covered mountains. The morning scene was made more pleasant by the sound of the water in Bull Yearling Run tumbling down the mountain and into the South River.

July morning
Greene County, Virginia
One morning last week I drove out into the county to see how mid-summer looks in the foothills of the Blue Ridge. It rained the night before, cooling the temperatures but leaving the humidity high. Along the South River, farmland slumbered in the morning mist and gray clouds hung over the mountains.
