Steam

Delaplane, Virginia 

This past weekend Norfolk &Western's J Class 4-8-4 steam locomotive 611 led three round trip excursions between Manassas and Front Royal. In the picture above, 611 passes through Delaplane, At the time of the Civil War, Delaplane was known as Piedmont Station, and it was here that Stonewall Jackson loaded his troops into rail cars bound for the First Battle of Bull Run (Manassas). It was the first time the railroad was used to move troops into battle.
