Nesting Ospreys

Alligator River, North Carolina

Earlier this month we made a short trip on the lower reaches of the Alligator River in Tyrrell County, North Carolina. In the tops of dead cypress trees on the edge of the river, there were several large osprey nests. In one particularly busy nest a couple of ospreys flew in and out of the nest constantly. Occasionally we could see the heads of chicks above the edge of the nest. I would guess that the nests were 40 to 50 feet above the water, and the birds paid no attention to our small inflatable boat floating around the base of their tree.
