Gone home - 1877

Wintergreen Cemetery - Port Gibson, Mississippi

Hands symbolized life. The hand pointing upward is an indication that the soul has gone to heaven.

Last year I spent an autumn afternoon among the moss draped cedar trees and weathered tombstones at Wintergreen Cemetery in Port Gibson, Mississippi. Wintergreen is one of the oldest cemeteries in Mississippi, dating from 1807. This week we will be looking at some of the old tombstones and explaining the iconography that reflects the sorrow and the hope of those left behind.
