Quinque, Virginia
This house has been vacant for as long as I can remember, but recently there has been some activity around the place. The grounds, which were overgrown a couple of years ago, have been cleaned up and trimmed and it looks like there may be work going on within the house. At one time there was talk of opening a bed and breakfast but I don't know the current plans for the property. This picture was taken on January 8, 2012.
The house was built for the Stephens family around 1850 and for many years the Stephens practically owned Quinque, which had a store, a blacksmith shop, a wheelwright shop, a distillery and mill. The town may have been named Quinque, which is Latin for five, because of the five buildings located there.
Today, Quinque consists of a Post Office, Ryan Funeral Home, the Pic 'n' Pac grocery store and Snow's Feed and Supplies, which occupies the old mill building.
Historical information is from Greene County, Virginia: A Brief History by Donald D. Covey, The History Press, 2007
Nice photo and interesting history of the property. Hope they replace that missing finial! Edd is there a way to photograph more of that house?
ReplyDeleteThat's a good question. I have never been closer to the house than the vantage point for this picture. If the house is undergoing restoration/remodelling, now would be a good time to get some photos to document the building before it is changed too much. I will have to see if I can make contact with someone and get permission to explore further.
ReplyDeleteThe home was occupied by a member of the Stephens family until about 8 years ago. The home is still owned by the Stephens family. Repairs to the home are being done by the family, for the family.
ReplyDeleteI have friends that visited the property when it was for sale. They had plans to develop lots behind the house but with the housing bust I'm sure that's now on the back burner. The owners live in a small cottage behind this house. I was told the mansion itself needs a lot of work that previous owners couldn't afford. Nice place.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the information. A couple of years ago there was a lot of activity around the place but recently there does not seem to be anything going on. It is indeed a nice place--would be a lovely home for the Greene County Historical Society, but of course they now have a nice old house in Stanardsville that will house the museum.
